These aren’t really a set of deer blind plans as much as they are an idea. With a deer blind this simple, you don’t really need a set of deer blind plans.

The idea is that you use what you have around you to build a blind on the spot.

This doesn’t mean that the blind is of poor quality. I’ve felt safer and more concealed in some thrown together ground blinds than I have in some elevated deer blinds. Another advantage to a ground blind made from local foliage is that a deer won’t recognize it as a threat. If you throw up an OSB box blind, it will take several weeks/months for deer to become use to it and not perceive it as a threat. But, a blind built from the local timber and foliage will be good to go the very next day.

One such deer blind is built by gather a dozen or so straight trees, about 4-6 feet in length. Lay the trees out and mesh them together with twine, much like a chain link fence is held together. Leave any small branches on the trees that are about 6″ to 12″ in length. Gather a bunch of local foliage, brush, pine bows, etc… and weave them through the branches and twine. Now you can sharpen the bottom edges of the trees and stick them into the ground in a circle and bend them in to make a tee pee. And ta da, you have a nice ground deer blind that won’t spook the deer, is easily transportable, and will last all seasons. Deer blind plans don’t get much simpler than that!

“You build a deer blind on the ground at eye level to the deer. If you want to be elevated you would build a deer treestand,” reminds Marty Prokop.

“When you build a deer blind, to add effectiveness, use natural surroundings. If you are hunting in a brushy area use the brush and vegetation. Even though a deer will notice your deer blind, the smell associate with a deer blind made with natural vegetation will not as readily spook or alert the deer,” Marty Prokop says.

Marty Prokop recommends, “Before you build a deer blind think through all the purposes you would like your deer blind to serve. Is your deer blind going to shelter you from the sun, wind and rain? If so, plan four waterproof walls, roof and door.

“Is your deer blind going to simply consist of one wall to block your silhouette in one direction? When you build a deer blind it could have three constructed walls and a fourth natural wall, if you build against a rock or large tree.”

“Before you build a deer blind decide on the size needed. How many deer hunters will be using the deer blind? Are deer hunters sitting or standing?” Marty Prokop asks.

“Consider on how many sides of your deer blind you want viewing and shooting windows. While you build a deer blind and certainly before shooting from a deer blind make sure you know your surrounding area. Are there any houses, buildings, people or domestic livestock nearby? Safety comes first,” Marty Prokop says.

“After you build a deer blind make sure the floor of your deer blind is clear of any sticks, twig, branches or grass that could alert a deer’s hearing should you move to position yourself for a shot,” says Marty Prokop.

Marty Prokop recommends, “When your time to build a deer blind has concluded remove scrap materials and trash. If you have decided to build a deer blind on public land or someone else’s land, at the end of the deer season, return the land to the way it was before you arrived.”

One bit of advice…if you’re going to build a deer blind and elevate any more than 4 feet, get a ground auger tie down kit. These things are really top-heavy and with a strong gust of wind, they will go over. You could use wire to and tie it down on each corner to some trees or something nearby, but I think a ground auger would reduce floor squeaking.

If you are hunting on public land the “pop up” portables would be the way to go.

If however you hunt private land consider building a deer blind. I have two on my property. One is elevated, made from a treated wood playtower that the kids have out grown. After reworking the frame to lighten it up I built a 4.5’x5’ base and its about 5.5’ inside height. This gives me about an 8’elevation when sitting inside. Insulate well with 2” foam all sides, floor and roof. Small-screened vents at the top of each wall helps fresh air to come in but you still stay very warm. I use Plexiglas strips about 2” to 3” wide around all four sides at eye height when sitting. This gives you a continuous panoramic view of your surroundings. Next, I made four shooting windows. These are hinged to pull down and are at a comfortable shooting height. Paint the inside of your blind black to hide movement and paint your shooting windows black on the outside so they always look open. Paint the outside with colors and shapes that match your woods.

I even made this blind portable. I welded up an axle hitch combo and bolted it to the towers wood frame. It pulls well with a truck or tractor. I usually move it around once a week during the summer so the resident deer can get used to it in various locations then in the fall I pick out two of three areas I like and move it as needed.
